Conscious Cleaning

What is Conscious Cleaning?

The simple answer: Adopting a more sustainable lifestyle by choosing cleaning products that are better for both people and the planet.

Why?

Traditional detergents with chemicals like ozone-killing volatile organic compounds, petrochems, chemical whiteners, colourants, and perfumes are the most dangerous products in our homes, and biggest polluters of the environment. They go down the drain, pollute rivers and oceans, and affect aquatic life. We’re eating a credit card’s worth of plastic each week and 90% of the water we drink and the food we eat contain microplastics. The single-use plastic packaging cleaning products come in are toxic as well. 600 million single-use plastic bottles may end up in landfills. By 2050, scientists predict that the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish.

But how do we do it?

It’s not easy. We can try by incorporating a few things into our lifestyle:

  • Looking for products that are non toxic, biodegradable, phosphate free, contain no dyes, no chlorine and no hypochlorite.
  • Choosing companies that practice sustainable manufacturing like using eco-ingredients and packaging, practice efficient water and energy usage, and carbon neutral shipping.
  • Eliminating the use of disposable products like single-use dusters, paper towels and wipes.
  • Eliminating single-use plastic bottles by choosing reusable or glass bottles.
  • Buying cleaning products packaged in bulk, waterless pods and concentrations.
